In the prologue Eva tells that she is a kind of robot which is programmed to
select which of their voices responds to the situation at hand. There are many
voices to chose from. Eva has experienced a lot. But she doesn’t know which
voice is the right one for the movement into the desert.
Chapter 1
We get to know Stephen R. Chinn.
He is a man who is in prison. He is sorry for that children turned more robotic
than the robots they loved and that he chose to destroy them. He is sorry for
what he has done and that children suffers from his actions.
He was writing that in his short amount of time behind the computer. He has to
sit between crooked bankers and pornographers. He is very bored in prison but
not unhappy.
Your status in the prison is based on earlier accomplishments.
Steven is popular by his inmates because for example he helped one man with
his function for speech. To thank him he gives Steven rations of caviar which they
eat on crackers. And at that moment he is unhappy because there is something
unkind in the taste of the ocean when you are in prison for life.
He is very glad with the garden and the pond. He doesn’t like the pond because
he remembers then how much he had forgotten.
Each Tuesday an overly optimistic old woman comes to teach them poetry but
only the nut-jobs attend them. Steven joins often.
Steven was raised by his grandmother and got a catholic education. He had been
told that he was an outgoing infant, he became actually an excessively serious
kid. He also was too proud and he only thought of others, for example that he
always wanted to be kind to his classmates or his impact on the environment.
So computers had his attention from the start because the program would was
clean. Because there were no errors otherwise the system didn’t work.
Steven was kind of weird because he spoke like a robot and he got denied a spot
at the lunch table. But Murray weeks helped him and shared his lunch together
with him. From that moment they got very close and spend each weekend
together to spend time on Alan turning’s intelligent machine. They had a lot of
fun
He is in pain when he now in jail think back if that time. Also when he compares
his friendship with the lonely youth of his daughter Ramona. She had one friend
which was a robot and didn’t care about other people. Years later when she took
distant from the robot she gave not only the robot op, she gave everything up.
But she was a very much caring person.
Steven’s intention with the babybots was to show their children how much more
human babybots were than a digital doll. But if he remembers his bond with
Raymond, it is a discussion whether he succeeded or not. He is very sorry for
what he has done.
