Lecture 4
HSOM
Process Operations Management
Patient care process
Processes and chains
Definition health OM of processes and chains
Management of patient care processes (and chains), as well as the required resources and
corresponding patient flows, in and between organisations
1
, Different kind of processes go together
Information & planning processes
Patient care processes
Material processes
Characteristics of care processes
- Elective (scheduled) or emergency (non-scheduled)
- Short term, long term of chronic care
- Predictability – deterministic or stochastic
o Sequence of steps (sometimes only know the first steps, depending on the
diagnosis one can plan the next step)
o Duration of operations (for some patients they know how long patients will
stay in the hospital, for some they don’t)
o Routing (different options to choose from)
- Complexity (of different care processes)
o Variety in operations (sometimes patients go through the same steps, but
sometimes completely different and complex)
o Linear or cyclic (going from hospital ward to long term care or back etc)
o Variety of specialties/departments/organisations involved
Relations between processes and specialties
This is in the book.
