PloS one, 15(6), 1- 13. ● Description of the purpose- ○ The purpose of this qualitative research study was to examine the beliefs and knowledge related to hypertension among individuals from the Dominican Republic in order to improve and develop culturally appropriate interventions for hypertension prevention, care, and treatment. Researchers wanted to examine and understand how health beliefs play a role in health promotion and disease prevention as they influence health behaviors, outcomes, and disease management. ● Explanation of research design- ○ The qualitative research design specific to this study was the ethnographic design, which focuses on describing a culture, social group, or system to better understand the beliefs and behaviors they follow and believe. An interpretive paradigm was used to gather the subjective data for this study where the participants were the sole focus or center of the research. Researchers not only gathered information through observation but by hearing from the participants themselves to understand their cultural beliefs via their perspectives to produce meaning. ● Discussion of sample- ○ The researchers recruited purposive, convenience, and snowball sampling strategies where participants were referred by the interviewers, a medical mission doctor, and members of a Community Health Committee (CHC) that promote health and serve as a point of contact for health initiatives in Esfuerzo del Paraíso of Santo Domingo Norte, the community where the study was being conducted.
