Het voorbeeld van Risjord over “democratic peace” beschrijft het sociaalwetenschappelijk idee dat
democratie, en het feit dat leiders gekozen worden door en antwoorden aan het volk, leidt tot een
einde aan oorlog. In deze propositie komen de drie centrale thema’s van de filosofie van sociale
wetenschappen duidelijk terug. Allereerst: naturalisme. Naturalisme gaat over de relatie tussen de
natuurwetenschappen en sociale wetenschappen in de vorm van het gebruik van causaliteit
bijvoorbeeld. In het concept van “democratic peace” komt dit terug in de argumentatie van Kant, dat
de kosten van oorlog leiden tot een keuze om het niet te voeren. Als tweede: reductionisme.
Reductionisme beslaat het probleem van de relatie tussen het individu en het geheel. In het kader van
“democratic peace” kunnen we onszelf afvragen of we de keuze voor oorlog gemaakt wordt door een
individu of door een democratische bevolking? Tot slot: normativiteit. Normativiteit gaat over
waardes, en waar deze staan in onderzoek. Dit komt in elk onderzoek terug, in de vorm van de
normen en waarden van de onderzoeker zelf.
Democratie
- holistisch: op zichzelf iets
- reductionist: als we democratie willen begrijpen, moeten we kijken naar actoren
- reductionist gaat altijd naar het laagste niveau
- holisme zegt dat het geheel meer is dan de som der delen
Reductionisme heeft overeenkomsten met naturalisme

Het onderzoek “What the Coronavirus Crisis Needs From Anthropology” (El Guindi, 2020) beschrijft
hoe onze geglobaliseerde wereld onderling verbonden en afhankelijk is geworden, dat we wereldwijde
organisaties hard nodig hebben (zoals de WHO) en dat de wereld op een wetenschappelijke manier
geïnformeerd dient te worden. El Guindi beargumenteerd dat via antropologie, er een wereldwijde
cross-cultureel perspectief geboden kan worden. In dit onderzoek speelt normativiteit allereerst een
grote rol: want waar liggen de waarden van een antropoloog, en hebben deze waarden invloed op hoe
de antropoloog het antropologische veld ziet? Daarnaast gaat het artikel in op de vraag
naar(natuur)wetenschappelijk gebaseerde data, en het feit dat dit niet alomvattend is, hier zien we
naturalisme terugkomen. Tot slot reductionisme: in het artikel spreekt El Guindi voornamelijk over
“society” en de “global field”, en niet over de individuen die deze termen vormen.
