Your Decision:

The government should have offered some kind of help to the citizens. One way was to increase
taxes for business owners and offering some kind of pension to the jobless citizens until the
economy stabilized and every person had a job. This would be tough for the business owners but as
they were already rich after selling war goods to the army, they could afford higher taxes and
this would help the jobless until they found a place to work. In order to increase jobs, the
government could have established a better trade network. Trading with the U.S.A and the
European countries would help maintain profit and create more jobs.

The FACTS that support your decision:

As revolution would break law and order in the country, the government was right in keeping this in
thought. But, it was necessary to acknowledge the issue of wages and jobs in Canada.

The business owners and industrialists had become rich after selling goods to the army at inflated
prices. At this time the government could have increased taxes for those people in order to help
out the ones who didn’t have jobs.

As many countries were exhausted after continuous war efforts, trading could have been a great
option to create jobs and increase profit. Exporting wheat, corn, fish, wood, etc. would help out
Canada and its jobless citizens.

Activity 2: Changes for Women in the 1920s (10 marks)

Use the pictures provided to analyze the changes in women’s dress from 1893-1928,
and draw conclusions about the impact that these changes would have on women’s
lives.

1. How had clothing for women changed in 25 years, and how would this affect the
daily lives of women in the 1920's? (5 marks)

For a long time women above the age of 14 had worn a corset every day in their
lives. Around the same time, they started tying their hair up and lengthening their
skirts. Also, due to the constriction of the torso, it made it difficult for women to
perform intense physical activities. A grown woman wore a dress to her feet, while girls
wore skirts. The women had long hair but were beneath the hats they had to wear when
they left their home. After World War One, the corset was replaced by a loose chemise
and the brassiere. Also, women dresses were only knee length and trousers were seen
sometimes in public. Women started keeping short hair, as it would be safer while doing
war work. After the war, short hair became common and hats became less fussy and
larger. Respectable women were allowed to wear makeup. On May 24, 1918 women were
granted the right to vote in federal elections. Women had much more freedom in clothing
and how they looked.
