Module: Foundation Project SAT0301

Week 19 – Research Methods: Results Section

Aim
 To look at the correlation between FOMO and self-esteem – we are expecting
a negative correlation.
 We will be examining some demo data and you will then be analysing some
real data after this session.

Analyse FOMO & self
In psychology, we usually have two kinds of statistics:
 Descriptive statistics
 Inferential statistics

Results
 You will be calculating a mean score (an average of all the numbers). This
can be done automatically for you on Excel.
 The mean is commonly used in psychology.
 Standard deviation is a measure of the spread in variability. You plot your
results first and then it will show you how spread out the results are. You just
need to report the value in your lab report.
 Make a scatterplot – a visual relationship of the relationship between the two
variables.
 If it’s a negative number, then it will tell you a negative correlation.
 If it’s a positive number, then it will tell you a positive correlation.

Standard Deviation
Little sigma symbol σ is the symbol for Standard Deviation

How to conduct the analysis for the lab report
 Calculate a mean score for the FOMO data. In here, you will be getting an
average. Select an empty cell, click on ‘autosum’ in Excel and then click
‘average’.
 Then do the same for self-esteem – get the average self-esteem score.
 Now calculate Standard Deviation. Select a blank cell, then click on the fx,
look down at the drop-down list, look for Standard Deviation. If you can’t find
it, then select ‘all’ and then search for it again. Once you have found Standard
Deviation, click on it. This time it will ask you to select which data you want to
