Advantages of Speech Corpora over DCT

Speech Corpora and Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT) are both ways of analyzing

speech. However, speech Corpora is more accurate when analyzing text for foreign language

learners. DCTs are a tool used by linguists to analyze speech. It also gets utilized in assessing the

acts that are closely related to speech. A DCT is usually made up of a one-sided situation

whereby the informant is required to come up with an answer to an already set question. For

instance, an informant may be made to take the role of a student and answer a question with

regards to an encounter with a lecturer (Adolphs 33). The informant has to answer how in the

most accurate way possible. The famous Shoshana Blum-Kulka created this tool. He developed

the tool as a means of analyzing speech acts that existed between the native and nonnative

Hebrew speakers. This tool is mainly used in linguistics to find our the disparities that exist

between natural and scripted speech situations (Boxen & Cohen 26). Linguist assumes that

scripted situations are in a way similar to naturally occurring situations. On the other hand,

Speech corpora can best be identified as a database containing speech and transcribed text files.

This database is used to come up with acoustic models. These speech models are then used in the

development of speech recognition software. Additionally, one can use the database in research

and analysis of conversations. The two models of next analysis are used widely across the world.

Discourse Completion Tasks and Speech Corpora are both sources that are used in analyzing

pragmatism. However, the corpora method is more accurate when coming up with a theory on

how we perceive various texts.

Discourse Completion Tasks

DCTs are efficient sources of data when testing a particular set of conditions in an

environment. The DCT takes place in an already set environment with the conditions tested.

Therefore, one is able to get the specific results they are looking for. This can lead to one making

an accurate conclusion on the hypothesis that they were testing. As discussed earlier, discourse

completion tasks are text analysis tools which are used to mimic a natural communication

testing. In the use of these text analysis tools, a linguist aims at bringing out the disparities that

exist between scripted and written speech (Crystal 27). The tool is set with one side of the

conversation, and the informant is expected to act tin the capacity of the role they are assigned by

the DCT.

Some scholars state that DCTs are the most accurate method of analyzing text. However,

others state that it is an inaccurate method of testing speech. Both parties give their reasons as to

why they believe DCT are either accurate or inaccurate method of analyzing disparities in natural

and scripted text acts. There exist some advantages to using DCTs. “These tasks usually referred

to as Discourse Completion Tasks or Discourse Completion Tests (DCTs) are widely and

successfully used in the study of Speech acts (see Chapter 5) and speech events (e.g., asking the

time). They are particularly favored as a methodology in the study of second language pragmatic

competence. They are essentially a type of language questionnaire whereby you elicit what a

speaker thinks they would say in a situation. In addition to their use in the study of speech acts

and events, they are used in dialect studies where they can focus on very specific structures”

(Boxer & Cohen 24).
