, 1. Background and Significance
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is not only a heterosexual social phenomenon, but it is
also present among certain homosexual relationships. Most studies report a similar
prevalence of intimate partner violence among heterosexual and homosexual
populations (Bartol & Bartol, 2018, p. 287). This study will focus on the occurrence of
intimate partner violence among homosexual men, in order to explore the factors
concerning this social phenomenon.

Although there has been an increase in the recognition of male IPV victims, very few
empirical studies have been done in order to understand this phenomenon, as most
studies done about gay men do not focus on anything beyond sexually transmitted
diseases (Oliffe, et al., 2014, pp. 564 - 565). This study aims to gain a better
understanding of IPV as a social phenomenon present in male same sex relationships
and to fill the blanks on the regular what and whys concerning this occurrence.

Male victims of IPV face a toxic view on masculinity generated by society and imposed
by the institutions within society. Homosexual men even more so, as their masculinity
are constantly under intense scrutiny (Oliffe, et al., 2014, p. 566). It is important to
empower these victims and support them when it comes to their own experiences of
IPV, without the shadow of toxic masculinity tarnishing their treatment.

Due to previous research, it is already known that there is a lack of studies that focus
on victims of IPV within homosexual relationships. One article determined that the lack
of research is due to the silence that surround the homosexual community, as there
are plenty of myths and fear surrounding the public discussion of this social
phenomenon (Rollè, Giardina, Caldarera, Gerino, & Brustia, 2018, p. 1).

However, according to a US-based report done in 2010, gay men is the subgroup of
the LGBT- community who experiences the most occurrences of intimate partner
violence. Intimate partner violence among homosexual men accounts for 31.5% of
LGBT based intimate partner violence (Oliffe, et al., 2014, p. 565). Another study
pointed out that 24.4% of homosexual men experienced physical abuse from their
partners and 39.4% of men were frightened by their partner’s behaviour (Miltz, et al.,
2019, p. 5).
