For most people, imagining death by tragedy is extremely hard to do. The simple thought of you or

someone you love passing away brings upon so many emotions. Especially if the cause of death was a

tragic event like being burned to death. I often cringe in fear of just watching others pretend to die in TV

dramas or horror films. Honestly, I’ve never even had a near death experience more severe than a minor

car crash or gunshots being fired at a distance in my neighborhood. According to Becker (1973), The

Terror management theory states that of all the things that have the potential to move man, however the

most effective is the terror of his own death. Fearing a death scenario is completely normal especially

when knowing that everyone has an end. Most of us want to leave earth painless and peacefully. As I

read the scenario, I thought to myself this person needs to wake up out of this

nightmare. The thought of being trapped in a burning room with no way out will bring all sorts of

emotions out of a person. Let’s start with waking up in a smoke-filled room, not being able to breathe,

rushed with the sudden emotion of terror. The thought of hearing the intense screams and being

smothered by the smoke pushed the person into survival mode. At this part of the scenario, I actually

thought there was hope for an escape. Imagining someone still willing to escape after feeling the pain

from the doorknob, but then being blown off their feet. I sensed the person becoming overwhelmed,

but not defeated. Maybe there is still a chance! I then visualized the person mustering the strength to

crawl for the only window to find it painted shut. The passage ends by, “the inevitable unknown that was

always waiting for you has finally arrived. Out of breath and weak you shut your eyes and wait to the

end.” Reading this made me question myself. What would I do in a near death situation? I’m dying

alone, but am I happy? Am I happy with the life I’ve lived? Reading this have made me think about the

smaller things in life that we take for granted.
