Nova Scotia Margin
• It is formed on a passive continental margin that developed after North America rifted and
separated from the African continent during the break-up of Pangea

• It represents over 250 million years of continuous sedimentation recording the region's dynamic
geological history from the initial opening of the Atlantic Ocean to the recent post-glacial
deposition.

• It covers approx. 280,000 km2 of area, and its maximum sediment thickness is approx. 24 km

• Early synrift, carbonate margin, fluvial-deltaic-lacustrine and deep water depositional systems.

• It consists of a series of alternating "highs and lows", or platforms. From the southwest to the
northeast they are named the Shelburne Subbasin, La Have Platform, Sable and Abenaki
Subbasins, Banquereau Platform, Orpheus Graben and Laurentian Subbasin.

Stratigraphy
• There are 3 branches of geology that aided the determination of the stratigraphy of the Nova
Scotia Margin: Biostratigraphy, Chronostratigraphy and Lithostratigraphy.

• Biostratigraphy - the branch of geology concerned with fossils and their use in dating rock
formations.

• Chronostratigraphy – the branch of geology where we establish the absolute ages of strata

• Lithology – is the general physical characteristics of rocks in the study area.

• These branches of geology were thoroughly reviewed and studied forming a stratigraphy
framework of the Scotian Basin.

 During the Early Triassic- Carboniferous age, the basement of the Nova Scotia margin started to
form. It is filled with unknown sedimentary deposits.
 In the Triassic period, there are 2 formations which are the Eurydice and Argo formations. The
Eurydice Formation is the oldest of the synrift sequences related to the opening of the Atlantic.
It is a thick series of Late Triassic red sandstones, siltstones and shales with a formation
thickness that is over 3000m. The Argo Formation lies just on top of the Eurydice formation
interfingering with it. It consists mainly of massive orange salt beds with some zones of red
shales originally having a thickness of 2000m at the least.
 The Breakup Unconformity separates synrift and post rift sequences in the Scotian Basin. It is
the cause of a major geologic event when North America and African continents split apart and
North Atlantic Ocean began to open.
 In the Early to Middle Jurassic, The Iroquois and Mohican Formations overlie the unconformity.
The transgressive Iroquois Formation consists of primarily dolostone deposited under slightly
restricted marine condition. It is also coeval with the lower part of the Mohican Formation
consisting of think formations of shales with thin to tick interbeds of sandstone and siltstone
sandstones and shales on the LaHave Platform where it reaches a maximum thickness of 800m.
 In the Mid to late Jurassic, the formations are: the Micmac, Abenaki, Mohawk and Verril Canyon
Formations. The Micmac Formation lies on top of the Mohican Formation and consisted of very
