, Exercise 4-1: Answer the following questions
1. What are the starting molecules and end products of photosynthesis? Make sure you
indicate the type of energy needed and/or produced.

The starting molecules of photosynthesis are CO2, H2O and light energy which is derived
From the sun. In contrast, the end products that are produced through this reaction are
Sugars as in glucose (glucose monosaccharide) and oxygen. This energy rich molecule can th
en be utilized by plants to drive important metabolic functions needed for survival.

2. What are the starting molecules and end products of cellular respiration? Make sure you
indicate the type of energy needed and/or produced.

The starting molecules of cellular respiration are sugars such as glucose and oxygen. Glucose
Is broken down through a series of chemical reactions to produce ATP as an energy source.
From this, the products are CO2, H2O and chemical energy. The chemical energy is the heat
Stored in the bonds of the ATP molecule, when catalized, releases great amounts of energy.

3. You will be using two organisms in this experiment. (a) Which organism(s) can you use to
study cellular respiration? (b) Which organism(s) can you used to study photosynthesis
and cellular respiration?

a) Could be studied in heterotrophs who get energy from other food sources such as dogs.
b) Autotrophs undergo both cellular processes and could be used, such as algae.

4a. In your experiment, which molecules will you monitor to determine whether cellular
respiration and/or photosynthesis take place.

I would measure the level of O2 molecule to monitor the rate of cellular respiration and the le
Vel of CO2 and H2O to monitor the rate of photosynthesis.

4b. How will photosynthesis affect the levels of these molecules in the tank?
In photosynthesis, the oxygen level will increase and carbon dioxide level will decrease.
This is because CO2 is a substrate and O2 is the product.

4c. How will respiration affect the levels of these molecules in the tank?
In respiration, the oxygen level will decline and carbon dioxide level will increase.
This is because the O2 is a substrate and CO2 is the product.
