OL Lab 8: Acids and Bases

Part 2: Report and Reflection
Purpose: Describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the purpose of this
experiment.
The purpose of this experiment is to learn the fundamentals of acids and bases and the
ways they can be characterized and used in the lab. Seeing how two compounds
touching can be acidic or basic.

Observations: Record three observations from the simulation.
Acids are proton donors and bases accepts protons, the Bronsted-Lowry definition.
Water molecules self-ionize, which results in a constant level of hydronium ions, even if there is
no acid added to the water.
Most acids and base solutions have a pH in the range pf 1 to 14. A pH of 1 means there is 1 mole
of H+ per liter.

Answer the questions below

1. In your own words, describe how to determine which substance acts an acid and which
substance acts as a base in the forward direction of the following reaction:

H2S + H2O ⇌ H3O+ + HS-
The reactant will always contain an acid and a base. The product will always contain a
conjugate acid and a conjugate base. The H2S is the acid because it donated an H. H2O
is the base because it accepted the H.

2. Predict the two products of the following neutralization reaction and label each product
using acid/base terminology:

HCl + RbOH → H2O + RbCl

3. In your own words, describe the relationship between proton (H +) concentration, and pH.
