Nhule“My son the Fanatic” was written by Hanif Kureishi and published in 1997. This short story is
about the relationship between the Pakistani immigrant dad (Parvez) and his son (Ali). Despite
how much adaption to the Western culture of his dad, Ali seems conservative with his religious
beliefs. Since Parvez drives a taxi at night, most of his customers would be prostitutes, that
leads him to meet Bettina, who then becomes a close friend and he even talks to her about his
private life, parts of it that he cannot tell any others including his wife. Recently, he realizes that
his son’s habits and pastimes have suddenly disappeared. He discussed it with his friends and
Bettina about Ali’s weird changes and appearance, they suspect that Ali might be taking drugs
and selling his belongings for drugs. However, after some investigating, he drops the theory,
since there is not any evidence matching with the possibility of his son being a drug addict. One
night, Parvez decided to have a discussion with the boy but it was not as good as what he
expected. For Parvez, eating pork, drinking alcohol and not praying are normal and that’s how
he can assimilate in the lifestyle there. However, Ali believes that his dad is too infected by
Western civilization and it’s wrong to break the Islamic rules. The way his son shows how much
he disgusts Parvez shocked him and made him feel helpless. One night, the boy meets his dad
and Bettina while he was driving her somewhere, Ali talks with Bettina for a while, both of them
then get angry and she gets out of the car. After returning home, Parvez enters Ali’s room and
beats him while he was praying, Ali’s only reaction is asking who the real fanatic is.
