The Great Gatsby Reading Response
- Based on chapters 1-4 -

Chapter 3:
Have you ever attended a large party or social event where you only knew one or two people?
Nick says he felt embarrassed and “welcome or not, I found it necessary to attach myself to
someone” Describe your own experience and reaction to the situation. How is your experience
similar or different from Nick’s situation?

I can relate to Nick’s experience because I’ve been to parties and gatherings where I only knew

the person who hosted the gathering first and a couple of the invited guests. However, my

experience differs from Nick's because I've never chosen to attach myself to anyone from the

invited people because I'm not very social with others and I also don't trust talking to anyone

easily due to past experiences.

gatherings, and other people who were not invited would come even though they had never met

the host, making the gathering overcrowded, busy, unfamiliar, and strange for me. It’s always

nice to meet new people, and I enjoy doing so. However, it initially frustrates me, but this

changes over time.

Eventually, when Nick was invited to Gatsby’s house and began asking about Gatsby’s

whereabouts, people would actually stare at him without giving him an answer, and if he kept

moving in the place looking for him, he ended up at the cocktail table, where if you sat there, it

would be the area where it doesn’t show the lonely people who don’t know anyone. “The only

place in the garden where a single man could linger without looking purposeless and alone.” ,

(Fitzgerald , 43). When I’m at a gathering and don’t know where the host is and try to find

him/her, I try to be in a place that appears to be distracted for anyone else to look at until I find

someone I know to go and spend the time with. I believe everyone has used this type of
