Assignment 31. What measures (Operating system, application software, network, hardware, etc.
…) are there in your computer to secure your data from hacking?
To secure my data from hacking, there are many anti-virus software that can be installed.
It is important to be careful whenever I surf the internet and click on links; They can have
malware or other viruses that can slowly destroy my computer.
I have bought Norton 360, an anti-virus and anti-malware software. It certifies the
websites that I visit by granting me access or by blocking them due to malware found.
When the website is blocked, Norton 360 explains what can happen to my computer if I
wish to visit the blocked website (which is a nice addition). It also provides a system of
parental control for younger kids and cloud backup.
My computer has the Windows Firewall and it is always turned on. It exists to protect my
Windows OS from network-based threats. It is mainly intended to protect the individual
computer system or network from intruders (hackers).
To keep my data safe, I use a VPN service, a virtual private network that helps me to
have a secure and encrypted connection between my computer and the internet. To make
it easier, VPN helps to create a secret private tunnel for my data whenever I use a public
network. In my case, I use Global Protect, which is useful whenever I need to control
some of my data from a distance as well. I can simply connect my computer to another
computer and keep all my activity in between private.
Whenever there are updates, it is important to install them as it will keep all your data
secure and up to date which will avoid any kind of loss.
2. How often do you back up critical data files such as homework files? What type
of device do you use for backing up files? Where do you store the backups to
ensure they won’t be destroyed if a major disaster (such as a fire) destroys your
computer? Do you use online sites for file backups?
I usually back up my files once a week to make sure they are still there and up to date.
For that, I use a USB flash drive and external drives. It helps me to always keep a
physical copy of my work wherever I go. I have the original copy saved on my computer,
but I always make a second copy on my flash drive, which is always with me. It can be
very useful if I do not have my computer to work with right now, I can just use my USB
to connect anywhere to work on it.
However, in the case, I lose my flash drive, or if my computer crashes, I will be in deep
trouble. This is why I also save my work on a cloud system. For schoolwork, there is
currently a free version of Microsoft, where I can create whatever type of document and
it stays in my Microsoft 365 student account. I can always have access to any computer if
