First Step: Alphabetic order

To complete the first step, I first decided to copy and paste the information that was given to me
into a new Excel sheet. After that, I selected column A and use “Sort & Filter” from the Home
Toolbar where I selected A to Z. Excel take all the first names of the students in the table and
sort them in alphabetic order. The last name, student number, assignments, midterm exam, and
final exam based on the first name follow along.

Second Step: Weighted Grades

I added a new column which I named “Weighted total (%)” in column G. It will be used to
calculate the total grade of the student. Based on the given information I have; I can calculate the
weighted total. To do that, I simply multiplied 20% with the assignment received in column D,
35% with the midterm exam, in column E and 45% with the final exam in column F. The
formula looks something like that in the case of the first student Alex Carter:
=(D2*20/100+E2*35/100+F2*45/100). Once I have my first cell completed with the total of
Alex, to save time, I can simply drag from cell G2 to G14 which gives me the weighted total for
all the students in a couple of seconds.

Third Step: Compute Grade

I added a new column which I named “Grade” in column H. It will be used to attribute the grade
of each student based on the table that was given by Professor Patel with the weighted total. To
do that, I used the function IF. A function that compares the cell to a value expected and tells us
if it is false or true. To be able to find the letter grade for Alex, I used the formula:
=IF(G2<60,"F",IF(G2<70,"C",IF(G2<73,"B-",IF(G2<77,"B",IF(G2<80,"B+",IF(G2<85,"A-",IF(
G2<90,"A",IF(G2<100,"A+","")))))))). Cell H2 gives me the letter F because Alex weighted
grade is between 0-59, which is inferior to 60. Once the formula is set, I can simply extend the
formula in the column from cell F2 to F14 to find the other student’s grade.
