Birth★ All stars begin their lives in nebulas → huge clouds of dust and gasses, mainly Hydrogen
and Helium.
★ The dust and gasses swirl around, breaking into clumps and contracting, because of gravity.
Early part of life
★ Eventually, the clumps are dense and hot enough for nuclear fusion to start.
★ They have now become new stars.
Most of life
★ Small/Medium Stars (same size or smaller than the Sun): Produce energy for ~10 billion years.
★ Large/Extremely Large Stars (10-30x the size of the Sun):Produce energy for a few million
years, but are very bright!
Old age
★ Small starts- Uses up hydrogen and other fuels, swells up into a large, cool red giant.
★ Large/Extremely Large Stars: Uses up hydrogen and other fuels, swells up into become a red
supergiant.
Death
★ Small/Medium Stars :Outer layers of gas drift away, and the core shrinks to become a small,
hot, dense white dwarf star.

★ Large/Extremely Large Stars: Core collapses inward, sending the outer layers exploding as a
supernova or a very large supernova.
Remains
★ Small/Medium Star: White dwarf star eventually cools and fades.
★ Large Star: Core material packs together as a neutron star. Gasses drift off as a nebula to be
recycled.
★ Extremely Large Star: Core material packs together as a black hole. Gasses drift off as a
nebula to be recycled.
