Class Response Week 2

The first example is biscuit. In the State and Canada, biscuit is the treat that a
kind of bread in small, soft cakes, raised with baking powder or soda. However, in
British, biscuit is twice baked that twice baked that is more firm and thinner biscuits
which \ require a harder dough to create the texture. If we want to express the same
meaning as biscuit in British, people have to say cookie. It is a language and culture
difference between North America and British as their history of language
developments are various with their regions.

The second example is the English idiom “break a leg”. It came from wishing
actors to have the opportunity to perform and get paid. The definition remains as good
luck and give a good performance. When we want to bless or eish someone to have
good work, we can say “break a leg”. However, in most of the Asian countries, people
do not have the same history and background information about “break a leg”. When
they hear “break a leg”, they simply think about physically break a part of the body. It
doesn’t contain any mean of luck. For example, if people say “break a leg” in Hong
Kong, they think that you are rude as you wish he or she to hurt themselves.

The third example is “666” in China and western countries especially in the
group of Christian. In China, young people like to say “666” as “牛牛”which means cool
and amazing . They have the same pronunciation, therefore, people like to use “666”
as slang. On the other hand, the occurrence of “666” is viewed an invocation of Satan
and regarded as a curse to others. Therefore, it is rude for others. When people in
western countries are choosing number, they might avoid number 6 as they think it is
not a lucky number.

By these examples, it shows that different culture background as different meaning
toward language. Most of the language are built with context, history, and culture that
everyone to socialize a norm of something which affect the value in specific regions.
