Instructions
This Lab has 5 parts as follows:
Part 1 - Fossil Identification
Use your knowledge of the features and characteristics of the groups you read about in the case
study notes to identify real specimens and/or features in videoed fossil samples.

Part 2 - Similarity Coefficients
Calculate two different similarity coefficients from a model data set of two areas.
Use similarity coefficients to reveal the position of the two model areas relative to one another.

Part 3 - Ocean Diversity Through Time
Use similarity coefficients from real fauna to examine what has been happening in the Atlantic
Ocean versus the Pacific Ocean since Jurassic time.
Provide a hypothesis for why the pattern you see exists.

Part 4 - British Columbia's Terranes as Noah's Arks
Compare similarity coefficients between faunas to interpret the direction of movement of
Wrangellia and Stikinia through the Early Jurassic.

Part 5 - Hypothetical Suspect Terranes as Beached Viking Funeral Ships
Calculate the minimum possible and maximum possible distances that two hypothetical terranes
may have moved during the Early Jurassic, before docking on the North American craton during
Cretaceous time. You will need to apply the concepts from the Smith paper in your notes to solve
this problem.
Share your distance results, explanation for the minimum distance traveled and the name of the
biogeographic pattern with colleagues and refine the interpretation by discussion. (Be sure to
keep a copy of your answers on your computer to use for the group portion as you will not be able

**Note that this is a hypothetical example only. It is meant to give you practice using the
biogeographic concepts that Smith used in his paper discussed in the Course Notes. It does not
come from actual field data. As such you CANNOT use the distances travelled or the scale from
the Smith paper to solve these problems. Use only the numerical and scale data given in the
figure given itself.

Individual Portion
This lab will take about 2 - 3 hours if you already have a good grasp of the Case Study 3 notes and
concepts before you begin. That said, I recommend you do not plan on completing this all in one
sitting. You may need time to think about some questions and/or bounce ideas back and forth with
your classmates and me (Louise) on the Discussion Board. Don't leave it to the last minute, just in
case! You can open and close this lab as many times as you like during the time that it is open. Just
remember, don't click 'submit' until you are ready for it to be submitted for grading. You will not be
able to access it again after that.

Group Portion
After the deadline for submitting the Individual Portion, you have a few days to complete the Group
Portion which focuses on 'Part 5' of the lab only. It is up to you and your group how you decide to
most effectively discuss the problems involved to arrive at a conclusion. Please remember you must
be an active group member in order to earn your participation marks.

Please start early or you will run out of time for this conversation. Frequent interactions and
discussions with everyone in the group are strongly encouraged! (Note: You will not receive any
marks for the group portion of the lab if you sign on too late and miss the group conversation that
occurred for the group to reach their final sketch submission. You will be too late and will receive a
score of '0' for this part of the lab. So, log on within the first 24 hours of the group portion to make
sure you are involved before you are too late!)
