Problem 2 – Eating disorders
According to DSM-5 all eating disorders in general are characterized by → persistent disturbance in
eating behavior

Common characteristics of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa: → intense fear of becoming
overweight and fat & → pursuit of thinness

Binge → out of control consumption of amounts of foods that are greater than what most other people
would eat in the same amount of time and under such circumstances

Purge → removing what one has eaten from the body via using self-induced vomiting, severe laxatives,
diuretics and enemas

Substitutes for purging → compensatory behavior e.g. severe exercise, starving

What are the differences between the eating disorders ?

• In Anorexia, very low weight → in bulimia and binge eating usually overweight
• In anorexia and bulimia patients fear gaining weight → not in the BED
• All have a problem with their body image
• All disorders except for Anorexia restricting type involves binge eating
• Purging occurs only in Anorexia – binge/purge subtype and bulimia – purging subtype
• All except BED use some kind of non-purging method to avoid weight gain
• Lack of control over eating is in BED, bulimia, and anorexia binge/purge type → not in the
restricted type (too much control)

The two types of anorexia

Restrictive: effort to limit quantity of food consumed, caloric intake tightly controlled, avoid eating in the
presence of other people

, Binge-eating/purge: having very low weight and controlling it by purging or other wight loss methods
