Intro :
Prend son essor à la fin des années 60 au moment où la théorie de l’identité psychophysique
est vivement critiquée.
Constat : le problème corps/esprit a été mal posé, savoir ce qu’est un état mental n’est pas
savoir de quoi il est constitué ou s’il est physique ou non mais savoir ce que cet état mental
fait, à quoi il sert.
S’inspire du behaviorisme.
I. L’EM selon le fonctionnalisme
Chaque EM a un rôle causal, une fonction spécifique qu’il occupe dans l’organisme.
La constitution physique des organismes instanciant des états mentaux n’importe pas du
tout : un même EM peut être réalisé par des organismes différents (software/hardware).
Chaque EM peut donc être défini en termes de relations à des entrées causales, des sorties
comportementales et à d’autres états mentaux (cf. Ned Block « What is functionalism? »).
Ex : la douleur n’est rien de plus qu’un mécanisme de détect° d lésions ds les tissus organic.
