Isotopy
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and
electrons but different numbers of neutrons. Example:
35Cl
&
37Cl
Isotopes have the same chemical properties but different physical properties
because they have different number of neutrons.
Radioisotopes are atoms of isotopes that are unstable and split up spontaneously to
form smaller atoms. Radioisotopes are said to be radioactive as when the nucleus
splits, radiation is released.
