Science: Biology Test Notes
Benjamin Jacob 8-QDLO
1.1 Composition of Air
Air is made up of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen. Organisms are made up of many systems that work
together to keep the Organism alive. Each system is made up of organs, which in turn are made up of tissues.
Tissues in turn are made up of cells, the basic structural and functional unit of all living things. The smallest is
cells, then tissues, then organs and then organisms. The human body has 11 systems, these are…

1. Nervous
2. Lymphatic
3. Digestive
4. Reproduction
5. Endocrine
6. Respiratory
7. Excretory
8. Circulatory
9. Skeletal
10. Muscular
11. Integumentary

To maintain functioning, cells need to bring inputs and remove outputs from themselves. Two of these
substances are important to all cells - oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The air that we breathe is made of 79% Nitrogen, 19% Oxygen and 2% Carbon Dioxide

To test these substances in the air we can conduct two tests. (Pg. 5)

The Limewater Test (Carbon Dioxide)

 To observe CO2 in the limewater it must turn milky and then return back to clear limewater

The Glowing Splint Test (Oxygen)

 To observe O2 in the blow out a small stick of fire and place it in a test tube giving of oxygen. If the
test tube has oxygen in it, it should relight.

Inputs Outputs
 Oxygen  carbon dioxide
 Glucose  urea
 Amino acids  glucose
 Fat  energy (ATP)
 Nutrients  proteins
 Vitamins  water and cell products (enzymes,
 Minerals hormones)
 Water
 hormones

Breathed Air:

 Has high amounts of CO2
 Low amounts of O2
 Humidity is generally higher
 the temperature is generally higher
 the cleanliness of the air is generally less clean
