Ellis and Associates ILTP Study Guide Graded A+ Standard of Care The degree of care a responsible person is expected to provide in preventing or managing the injury or illness of others. Accountable to: Guests, Employer, and Self 10/20 Protection Standard 10 seconds to recognize a guest in distress and 20 seconds to reach guest and begin to render aid Zone of Protection The 10/20 Protection standard is the basis for determining the appropriate position for lifeguard stations and the size of each area that a lifeguard needs to protect. *Extremes* - points in water you have to check: top layer, middle layer, bottom layer, and bottom scan. Scanning: Vigilantly watch assigned zone of protection, move head and eyes High Risk Areas: ~ Children's activity pools ~ Slide catch pools ~ Wave pools ~ Traditional lap pools High Risk Guests: ~ Children ~ Non-swimmers or weak swimmers not wearing life jacket (should be labeled U.S. coast guard approved) ~ Guests who have consumed drugs or alcohol ~ Guests who are prone to sudden illness ~ Elderly guests Drowning Process Surprise, Respiratory Arrest, Unconsciousness, Hypoxic Convulsions, Cardiac Arrest, and then Death. Active GiD A guest in the first two stages of the drowning process. An active GiD can be found on the surface or below the surface (within or beyond arm's reach). Passive (Silent) Drowning GiDs slip quickly and silently beneath the surface and do not follow the drowning process. Recognizing a Guest in Distress A GiD in the water will only be on the surface, below the surface within arm's reach, or below the surface beyond arm's reach. Body Position: diagonal or vertical. Movement: Little or no forward movement. Appearance: All effort to staying above water, eyes may be open or tightly
