SOC1140: Canada in the Future
Assignment Description
Portfolio Project (30%)

This final project asks you to take everything you have learned in this course and use it to predict how
your life will go over the next 5, 10, 20, and 30 years. You must write about each of the day-to-day
activities that we discussed in class (education, work, housing, driving, social, and financial trends).
Ultimately, what do you think your life will look like in 30 years?

To get started, think about your major life goals. Do you want a house? Will you get married? Will you
have kids? How will you complete your education? What kind of job do you want to do?

Your assignment should accomplish the following:

1. Analyze megatrends and national trends to provide evidence of what life in Canada will look like
5, 10, 20, and 30 years from now. Focus on the 30-year timeline.

Megatrends are largely, social, economic, political, environmental or technological
changes that are slow to form, but influence a range of activities, processes and
perceptions, for a long time. Changes in Canada demographics (population,
density, immigration, technology, education and other aspects of the human
population) will bring about significant social changes, and in turn challenges and
opportunities.

being issued for multi-family dwellings. The shift reflected the large population
growth of the post-war economic boom. Since 2012, apartments (including
apartment-condominiums) have had the highest construction intentions in
Canada, which has not occurred since 1973. Over the past 40 years, apartments
and single-family homes have accounted for the vast majority (85% on average) of
new construction, whereas rows and doubles accounted for about 15% of new
construction accounted for. The ever expanding suburbs and the emergence of
apartments and apartment condominiums in Canadas largest urban centers is not
only a lifestyle choice but also due to important demographic, economic and
societal changes, this are: Increasing immigration, decreasing household size,
changing household characteristics, an aging population, high prices of single
