Les variables d’état :
1. L’effectif
Le nombre minimal d’individus donne un effectif.

Le degré de sociabilité d’un individu indique : sa capacité à vivre avec les
autres, on distingue alors entre :

- Degré de sociabilité élevé : comportement sociale marqué. Ex : abeille.
- Faible degré de sociabilité : comportement sociale peu marqué ou
absent. Ex : les lions.

L’effectif est bien défini lors :

Population d’animaux sédentaire (stable).
Territoire bien délimité.
Echanges rares avec les populations voisines.

2. La densité :

a. Définition :

La densité : nombre d’individus par unité de surface ou de volume. On
distingue :

- Densité brute : Représente le rapport entre l’effectif (N) d’une population
et la surface (S) qu’elle occupe : DB= N/S.

- Densité écologique : Rapport entre l’effectif d’une population et la
surface utilisable (SU) de l’écosystème (surface où la population trouve
les ressources qui lui sont nécessaires) :
DE = N/SU.
