Einstein
● Einstein made major contributions in many areas of physics, including the
stimulated emission of photons, which is the mechanism through which lasers
operate.
PAGE 3
● Einstein's most scientifically productive years culminated in his 1915 Theory of
General Relativity, which solved the precession of Mercury's perihelion problem.
However, he came to reject many of the ideas of Quantum Mechanics.
● In his early years, Einstein was a bright scholar, but had his bad days. His
classics teacher told him he would never amount to anything.
PAGE 4
● The general public's mind associates Special Relativity with the ultimate in
abstruse and incomprehensible science, and Einstein with the invention of the
atom bomb. However, Einstein did sign a letter to Franklin Roosevelt to call
attention to nuclear research that might lead to devastating military weapons.

Relativity
● There are two theories encapsulated in the popular term 'Relativity', Special
Relativity and General Relativity. We will concern ourselves mainly with General
Relativity in this book.

Special Relativity
● The concept of relativity has a very long history, dating back to Heraclides and
possibly even earlier. In the 1890s and early 1900s, many physicists were
working on concepts of relativity similar, if not identical, to those of Einstein.
● Einstein's theories of relativity compare the views of stationary and moving
observers of one or more events, such as you sitting down to breakfast at home
