Haitians Views of Homosexuality

Religion strongly influences the Haitian community. Haiti is predominantly Catholic, with a

significant portion of the population adhering to Vodou practices (Bourgois, 2018). Both

Catholicism and Vodou believe homosexuality to be sinful, immoral, and unnatural (Bourgois,

2018). They usually support it with verses or passages from their doctrines condemning

homosexual behavior. These interpretations have led to the belief that engaging in same-sex

relationships goes against God's will and is therefore considered a sin (Desrosiers et al., 2022).

However, the new generation, particularly those exposed to western influences, might view

homosexuality as more acceptable (Desrosiers et al., 2022).
