Question: What role does humility play in the production of new knowledge on a personal
and societal level?

On a personal level humility plays an important role in the production of new knowledge, as it
helps you disregard your biases and pride to learn new things. When you’re humble you are able to
admit your way of thinking may be wrong and you’re willing to listen to other people’s opinions. By
hearing new perspectives and being aware of more aspects of a certain situation rather than only
believing in one thing because of pride, you will gain knowledge a lot more quickly and easily.
Research even states that people who believe in one thing only are likely to incorrectly draw
definitive conclusions from ambiguous evidence. If you’re overconfident and believe that you’re
right, you’ll never allow yourself to hear other opinions, even if you do hear them you’ll probably
ignore them due to your strong biases and pride. This holds you back personally from learning
things and improving on yourself. Humility is the acknowledgment of your limitations; therefore,
humility actually encourages a person to learn new things. Humility is an asset for self-
improvement. By living a humble life, you recognize the areas of your life that need work. An
example of humility helping someone gain new knowledge on a personal level is if a teacher
suggests changing a technique to aid your performance in school, it's good to accept that your
current technique may not be the best suited for your goals and change for the better.

In a societal level being humble helps to build trust and facilitates learning, which are key aspects
of leadership and personal development. It's being open to new ideas, listening to others, and not
underestimating people. It's also being able to admit your mistakes and learn from them. When
you're humble, you're more likely to accept feedback and new ideas from others. This will make you
more liked in society. An example of humility in society is at work. It's not enough to be smart or
talented; you also need to be humble enough to admit when you don't know something and then
be willing to learn. Nelson Mandela said “The first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never
have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself” This is a clear example that humility
helped Nelson Mandela be a good leader because he was open to learning new things, changing
himself etc.
