A.C. 2.2 Write Up - Evaluate the effectiveness of media used in campaigns for change

One of the media used in campaigns for change is blogs, which is a regularly updated
website or web page, updated by an individual or small group of people in an informal style
to promote campaigns work to a wider audience.
This media is very informative and can be accessed by all people on the internet, presented
in the form of an in-depth summary of a campaign's work, which also links to other
resources. It is free of charge and open to all people to express their views and opinions.
On the other hand this media is not as popular to use due to the fact that it is very time -
consuming to not only read but to write. This leads to it being outdated or not relevant as the
time it is posted in correlation with the campaign’s acts and their timeline. By being only
accessible on the internet, it does not reach a large group of people who are not on the
internet and may not reach the campaign target audience. While everyone expressing their
views is a good way to reach out to the general public, it also allows the error of false and
misleading information that is not tied to the campaign.
One campaign that uses blogs is Unlock, which is a campaign dedicated to informing people
on the progress of helping ex-convicts move on with their lives. The blog page acts as a
resource to help other people who are interested in helping and researching find other
sources of information about updates or all-around knowledge of Unlock. The problem is that
people do have to already be aware about the campaign before accessing the Unlock blogs.
For example, the most recent blog posts got only 2 likes and no shares on Facebook,
showing not many people are seeing these blogs posts.
Overall, this media campaign is not very effective as it only helps people who are aware of
the blogs, not the general public in supporting the campaign altogether.

Another media usage is viral messaging across social media networking. This is when
messages or posts on social media are passed on from one person to the next, spreading
awareness for a post among the general public, helping to connect people all over the world.
Some advantage of social media is spreading the message of a campaign quicker and to a
larger group of people that are all in the official target demographic. It has the ability of
reaching people who are on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, which are
all free sites and far more popular at this time, where 2.3 billion people have created
accounts on social media websites. There is also a higher possibility of people who are not
aware of campaign acts at all, seeing the campaign and researching more into it.This also a
far more effective way of communicating with the audience in a time-efficient way and is very
easy to understand.
However, it does not reach all people. Not everybody is on social media, which means that
the campaign misses out on large groups of people, usually elderly and homeless people,
who they may have been dedicated to. The people who are on social media can also spread
false information ( called fake news ), which leads to different opinions and result in internet
“trolling”, where people say hurtful things to people with different views to them. There is also
a chance that a campaign page can be hacked online and lead to people viewing things from
the official campaign that may not be true.
There are many campaigns that use social media and viral messaging to bring awareness to
their campaigns. For example, Time To Change, released a coaster as part of a campaign to
end mental health discriminiation, which was later given to pubs and bars. On the coaster it
read, “ Is there a mate missing out around this table? Reach out to him.” A picture of the
