Lesson 1: Functions, Domain, and Range

To write a function using function notation, the form f(x) = … is used to indicate a function, f, with
independent variable x.

The notation f(3) means the value obtained when x = 3 is substituted. f(3) is read as “f at 3” or “f of 3.”
Although f is the most popular letter used when writing function notation, any other letter of the alphabet can
be used.

1) Given the graph of y=f(x), find:
a) f(2) =

b) f(8) =

c) f(−2) =

d) The solution(s) to f(x) = 6

e) The solution(s) to f(x) = 0

f) The solution(s) to f(x) = 10

, Relation: an identified pattern between two variables that may be represented as ordered pairs, table of
values, mapping diagram, graph, or an equation.
Function: a relation in which each value of the independent variable corresponds to exactly one value of the
dependent variable.
Vertical line test: A method of determining whether a relation is a function. If every vertical line intersects
the relation at only one point, then the relation is a function.
Table of Values Mapping Diagram Graph

Ordered Pairs Equation

{(−1, 0), (0, 3), (3, 7), (5, −11)} y = 2x + 3

Domain: the set of first coordinates (x), the set of elements to which a variable is limited.
Range: the set of second coordinates (y), the set of values a function may take on
1) Circle whether the following relations are functions. Then, state the domain and range.
a) Function? Yes No b) Function? Yes No c) Function? Yes No
