לפניכם קטע מתוך הסיפור "עַ וְ לָה" מאת הסופר יוסף חיים ברנר:
פעם אחת ,בימים שבהם שלטו הטורקים בארץ ,ישבתי בערב לאור המנורה .כל החברים כבר ישנו.
פתאום נשמעה דפיקה קלה בחלון .נרעדתי ויצאתי לראות ,מי הדופק ,והנה קצין גרמני רטוב מכף-רגלו ועד
ראשו עומד על יד הדלת ושואל" :מי גר פה? לא יהודים?"
– "פועלים יהודים" ,עניתי.
הקצין ביקש רשות להיכנס הביתה ומייד נפל על כיסא ,כי לא יכול היה לעמוד על רגליו .כל-כך היה עייף .הוא
תעה בדרך ,והגשם הרטיב אותו כולו .הצעתי לפניו אוכל ומשקה .הוא רעד כולו מן הרטיבות.
אני הערתי את כל חברינו .כולם נבהלו מאוד ,אך מייד דאגו לכל צרכיו של אורחנו החשוב – בין באוכל ובין
בלבוש.
אורחנו ,לאחר שהתלבש בבגדים יבשים ,גילה לנו כי לא גרמני הוא ,אלא אנגלי .הוא קצין אנגלי ,שברח מחיילי
האויב הטורקי ,הרודפים אחריו מזה שלושה ימים.
נדהמנו כולנו ולא ידענו מה לעשות .ובכן ,יש גם שאנגלים נשבים על ידי הטורקים! ידענו כי אפשרי הדבר ,אבל
לראות בעינינו קצין אנגלי שבוי ,זה הכאיב כל-כך!
אנחנו התחלנו להתנצל שאיננו יכולים לעזור לו ,שהוא צריך לדעת ,היחס אלינו מצד הממשלה הטורקית מאוד
קשה ,חושדים בנו ,כמרגלים הננו בעיני הטורקים ,סכנה צפויה לנו.
פינינו לו מקום ,והוא שכב ונרדם מייד .ואנחנו ,התווכחנו ,מה לעשות?

0 2 העלייה ממרכז אירופה בשנות השלושים
קראו את המאמר הבא ,מתוך אתר אינטרנט ,על העלייה החמישית לארץ ישראל.
שנות השלושים של המאה ה 20-גרמו לשינוי במעמדה של ארץ ישראל בעולם היהודי .המשבר הכלכלי,
התגברות האנטישמיות ועליית כוחם של הנאצים בגרמניה ,מצד אחד וההגבלות שהוטלו על הגירת יהודים
לאמריקה ,מצד שני ,הפכו את ארץ ישראל ליעד העיקרי לעלייה.
עליית המשטר הנאצי לשלטון בגרמניה ,בשנת ,1933והפלישה לארצות השכנות ,הביאה לבריחתם של יהודים
רבים מגרמניה ,מאוסטריה ומצ'כיה ולעלייתם ארצה .העולים ממרכז אירופה היו רק כעשרים אחוזים מכלל
העולים לארץ ישראל בשנות השלושים ,אך השפעתם על החברה היהודית בארץ הייתה משמעותית וחשובה.
רבים מעולים אלה היו בעלי מקצוע ,כגון רופאים ,אומנים ,אקדמאים ואנשי עסקים עשירים .הכסף שהם
הצליחו להביא איתם ,עזר לשיפור המצב הכלכלי בארץ והביא לפיתוח מהיר של הבנייה ,התעשייה והחקלאות.
בתוך שנים מעטות ,הקימו העולים ממרכז אירופה כ 250-מפעלים שייצרו מגוון רחב של מוצרים ,כגון :בגדים,
נעליים ,בירה ,שוקולד ,תרופות ועוד .הם הקימו בתי מלון ,פתחו חנויות ובתי קפה בסגנון אירופאי ,ניהלו
בנקים וחברות ביטוח.
פרופסורים ואקדמאים יהודים שנאלצו לעזוב את האוניברסיטאות בגרמניה ,התקבלו לעבודה כמרצים
באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים .הם הקימו את הטכניון – בית הספר הגבוה לטכנולוגיה בחיפה ,את מכון
וייצמן למדע ואת בית הספר לחקלאות ברחובות .אקדמאים שלא קיבלו עבודה באוניברסיטאות ,לימדו בבתי
ספר או שעבדו בחקלאות.
לעלייה ממרכז אירופה הייתה גם השפעה רבה על חיי האומנות בארץ .התזמורת הפילהרמונית הישראלית,
שהוקמה בשנת 1936בעזרתם של מוזיקאים ממרכז-אירופה ,היא אחת התזמורות החשובות בעולם .בין
העולים ממרכז אירופה היו רקדניות שהקימו בתי ספר למחול ,שחקנים ואנשי רוח ,שהיו בין מקימי התיאטרון
של תל אביב ואולפני הקולנוע הראשונים בישראל.
עולי מרכז אירופה השפיעו על אופיה של החברה הישראלית .היסודיות ,הסדר והקפדנות שלהם ,השפיעו גם על
דרך הניהול של רבים ממוסדות המדינה.
