Understanding these concepts will enable the nurse to assess the various elements of a particular concept to benefit the patient. By using concept analysis, the development of conceptual framework, research studies and theories are being identified. Nursing theory guide nursing interventions, and provide a framework for measuring outcomes by explaining the why and how of nursing practice ( Schaffer, Sandau, & Missal, 2017). The selected nursing concept will be Self-care. The self-care concept was introduced as an element of nursing theory by Dorothea Orem. This paper will discuss the definition/explanation of self-care along with its use in Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care nursing theory. A literature review with supporting scholarly references to help identify themes, ideas and facts. Defining attributes, an antecedent, a consequence, empirical referents and construct cases will also be presented. Finally, a discussion on theoretical application of the concept of self-care and its relationship to theory will conclude this paper. Definition/Explanation of Self-Care In order to make full use of the concept of self-care, it is important to fully understand its definition. According to the English Oxford dictionary, “Self-Care” is the practice of taking an active role in protecting and promoting one's own well-being and happiness without assistance especially in stressful situations (“Self-Care”, 2019). Self-care involves the individual to make helpful decisions and actions about their health that can contribute and maintain their wellbeing. In Orem’s self-care theory, she emphasizes the role of healthcare providers in assisting a person perform activities that contribute to their health and well-being.
