The Diversity and Importance of Macronutrients and Fibres in Our Diet
Nutrients are an absolutely fundamental substance that keep us both alive and healthy.
They give our bodies energy and help in the production and reproduction of cells. Although our
bodies are not able to provide us with all of the nutrients we require, following a healthy and
proper diet will help us obtain those necessary nutrients. The 6 essential nutrients that we need
to stay healthy are split into two groups, micronutrients and macronutrients. Micronutrients
include vitamins and minerals, whereas macronutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, and
lipids. All of these nutrients must be either supplied to the body or produced. In this paper I will
be discussing the variety and abundance of macronutrients and fibres in a single serving of
salmon rice patties and concluding with whether or not it meets all of the requirements.
Starting off with protein, in one serving of salmon rice patties we are provided with
36.02g of protein, which in total measures up to 66% of the daily recommended intake, known
as the DRI. This DRI goal for protein is 54.43g. The calories that are derived from the protein in
this meal adds up to 144.08 kilocalories. That is 24.57% of the total calories, thus fitting quite
well into the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range, or the AMDR. This range for protein
is between 10%-35%. (Figure 1) In this meal the salmon contains 25g of protein, making it the
, main source of protein in this meal. (Figure 2) Given that fish contains all 9 essential amino
acids, it is a quality source of protein. Protein is an energy yielding macronutrient which is
consumed and carried throughout the body and cells, as amino acids, these are the building
