• Anglo-Saxon society was flexible. E.g. peasant farmers could become thegns if they did w

what the Witan should advise him on. Also, he didn’t
have to follow the Witan’s advice if he did not want to.
• The shire reeve (sheriff) was the kings representative
in local government. Their responsibilities included:
• Collecting revenue and the geld tax from land in the shire
• Collect fines from the shire court
• Judge cases and witness laws being enforced at the shire
court.
• Provide men for the fyrd (Anglo-Saxon army).
• Ensure roads and defences are well-maintained.
