"Natasha was splashing in the water, all happy and stuff. Then—
Pow! Pow! Pow!
I dove into a rosebush. By the time I got up, somebody was yelling, “Call nine-one-one!” At first
I thought it was me, ‘cause I had blood on my shirt. The thorns on the rosebush got me, that’s all.
It was Natasha though. Her blood mixed in with the water, and all you could see was a red river
flowing down the street.” (Pg. 29)

This passage is important because it helps develop Starr's character as well as develop the theme
of hate. This part of the story is important in developing Starr's character because it shows a very
important traumatic experience from her past. This event is shown to have affected how she
responded to Khalil's death because she had already seen her other childhood best friend die. It is
also shown to affect Starr's behaviours and her feelings towards guns. Despite having gone
through this traumatic experience, Starr continues her life and manages to put it behind her while
still cherishing the memory of her friend, this shows her being strong from a young age. This
passage also helps develop the theme of hate. Natasha was a victim of a drive by, by a gang
member. This develops the theme of hate because it shows violence that was the result of a gang
war. Said gang war goes on to cause even more pain and suffering throughout the community
because of the hate between the two largest gangs. Natasha's death is a crucial part of Starr's
character and it also is a prime example of hate in the novel.
