Journal 9 Term 2Starr Carter from The Hate U Give would do well in Waknuk society because she is very good at
conforming to fit the norm. It is shown, multiple times throughout the book that Starr changes
her personality based on her situation. In Garden Heights, she acts like the people around her and
at Williamson, she also acts like those around her. “That means flipping the switch in my brain
so I’m Williamson Starr.” (pg. 71) This shows how Starr is used to changing her personality and
hiding who she really is. This would help her do well in Waknuk society because if she had a
deviation she would be able to hide it very easily and blend in. “Williamson Starr is
nonconfrontational.” (pg. 71) Being nonconfrontational would be very useful for her in Waknuk
because it means she would not go looking for trouble. This again would make hiding her
deviation, if she were to have one, much easier. Starr’s incredible ability to blend in and go along
with whatever the norm is in an area is why she would do well in Waknuk’s society.
