Romeo and Juliet is a play focused around the ideas of love and hate. Despite the fact that

the play’s lessons can seem comical there are actually many practical lessons one can learn from

it such as enjoy everything in moderation, don’t hold onto hate, and trust your instincts. In act

four as Friar Lawrence is about to marry Romeo and Juliet he gives them a warning “... The

sweetest honey is loathsome in its own deliciousness. And in the taste destroys the appetite.

Therefore, love moderately....” (2.6.11-14) He warns them that too much of a good thing can end

up turning bad. This is a very useful thing you can learn from Romeo and Juliet because it

teaches you that even good things need moderation. Another lesson that can be learned from

Romeo and Juliet is that it is not good to hold onto hatred. At the end of the play, the Montagues

and the Capulets end their long-standing feud because of their respective children dying. This

shows that it is better to simply forgive and forget rather than hold on to hate because if their

feud had ended earlier it is very likely that their children would have still been alive. Finally, a

lesson that can be learned from Romeo and Juliet is to trust your instincts. Before the Capulet’s

party when Romeo is voicing his concerns he says “By some vile forfeit of untimely death. But

he that hath the steerage of my course” (1.4.118-119) He is saying that he does not want to go to

this party because his dream told him it would be his doom. This ended up being correct as he

died due to his relationship with Juliet whom he met at the party. These are all things that one

can learn from Romeo and Juliet.
