reaction, indirectly by summing the heats of related reactions. The specific reaction under

scrutiny involves the combustion of magnesium, which is when an element reacts with O2(g)

and is a process represented by the equation: Mg (s) + ½ O2(g) ⇒ MgO (s), a process known

for its rapid release of light and heat. To tackle this challenging measurement, a metal

calorimeter is used. The journey towards understanding this scientific principle is paved with two

distinct reactions: one involving magnesium oxide and hydrochloric acid, and the other featuring

magnesium metal and hydrochloric acid. Through experimental procedures involving calorimetry

and temperature measurements, the aim is to not only reveal the heat of these individual

reactions but also to confirm the principles of Hess's Law and acquire valuable insights into the

heat of combustion for magnesium.
