Unit 7: Children's Personal, Social and Emotional development. Elize Bridewell

Exploring how to prepare an support children through transitions and significant life events-
Report 2.

Introduction:
During my second report about preparing and supporting children
through transitions and significant life events I will be covering the
impact that they can have on the children, strategies to prepare
children and how to spot indicators that a child has settled in
comfortably. The transitions that a child may experience could be
moving house or moving school, along with significant life events
like divorce, death or birth of a new sibling. All of these have an
impact on a child's personal, social and emotional development
and that is what I will be covering. I will be gathering the
information for trusting websites and books to ensure I get the correct ideas. During the report I will
also cover ways that a key person in my placement may have dealt with situations involving
transitions and significant life events.

The impact of transitions and significant life events:
Transitions are likely to happen within the first 5 years of a child's life. A
child could experience multiple transitions at young ages. For example,
going from nursery to primary school, crawling to walking and learning to
read and write. When a child is going to be moving up to a new school it
can be scary and emotional for them as it is a new experience. As a child's
key person you should consider ways to support and prepare the children
through times like this and you could do that by talking to the child about
what will be happening so that they begin to understand the situation,
you could role play moving to a new school so that they can visually see
the event happening or you could read the child books on moving schools and this way it will
become less scary and overwhelming for them as it is told in a fun and interesting way with a book
and pictures. Going the a transition like moving up from nursery to reception class could make the
child very emotional as they would be moving from the setting that they feel comfortable and secure
in and where they know everybody to where they don’t know anyone. Some schools may allow
parents to take their child to look around where they will be moving up into so that they can meet
their new teacher and maybe some of the people that will be in their class. This could help with the
child's social and emotional development as they cope with their emotions and make new friends.
When going through transitions children may seek attention, have emotional breaks, find it difficult
to concentrate or be aggressive. Significant life events like death in the family or divorce often have a
bigger impact on a child as it effects them on a all levels, personally, socially and emotionally, so as a
key person you would need to really support the children and give them the correct comfort to
enable them to deal with the situation correctly.

Transitions and significant events can have an impact on a child's holistic development. They impact
a child's social development as they may attention seek by acting badly, they may begin to play
solitary which is on their own and they may lack interest in playing with other children when usually
they enjoy doing this. Ways in which big events can impact their emotional development is by
causing the child to have temper tantrums, they could become clingy or they could have bursts of
anger which is often directed towards their key person as that is the person that they have the
