The Greek World
Archaic Period (circa 800-480 BC)

Flourished with artistic contributions

Greek architects erect the first peripteral Doric and Ionic temples

religious actives happened outside of the temple and statues were
placed outside, east side of the temple

temple itself was the residence place for god or goddess rather than
gathering place for worship

had a bird’s eye blueprint plan

peripteral colonnade: continuous columns going all around the temple

Cella (Naos): statue of the deity

Elevation: schematic view of the facade

Doric VS Ionic

differ in capital with its columns and with the form of frieze

Doric: columns are more plain and sturdy looking; frieze trig rips
and the meta piece

Ionic: more decorative and delicate looking; capital with the two
wing looking scroll on both sides

flut: vertical lines on the pillar

doric dont have base peice

both painted

early greek temples were painted and featured saturated vibrant color

Greek sculptors carve life-size stone statues with “Archaic smiles”

Kouros (pl kouroi): if a young men died a heroic death in honor of that
person’s memory statues would be commissioned

It stands beside his burial site

Kroisos kouros is more accurate and the head is more proportionate
