Lung volumes:
1• Tidal volume = volume of air inspired or expired by a person during normal
respiration is called tidal volume. It is approximately 500ml (about 16.91 oz)
2• Inspiratory Reserve volume = Additional volume of air a person can
inspire after tidal volume by a forcible inspiration is called inspiratory reserve
volume. It is approx. 2500-3000 (about 84.53 - 101.44 oz)
3• Expiratory Reserve Volume = Additional volume of air a person can expire
after tidal volume by a forcible expiration is called expiratory reserve volume.
It is approx. 1000-1100ml (about 35.19-37.2 oz)
4• Residual Volume = Volume of air remaining in the lung even after forcible
expiration is called residual volume. It is approx. 1100-1200 (about37.2-
42.23oz)

Lung capacities:
1• Functional Residual Volume = Volume of air that will remain in the lung
after normal expiration. This includes ‘Expiratory reserve volume and Residual

2• Vital Capacity = The maximum volume of air a person can breathe out
after a forced inspiration or Maximum volume of air a person can breathe in

3• Inspiratory Capacities = Total volume of air a person can inspire after a
normal expiration. This includes ‘Tidal volume and Inspiratory reserve volume’

4• Expiratory Capacities = Total volume of air a person can expire after a
normal inspiration. This includes ‘Tidal volume and Expiratory reserve
