Causes of Cold War
The US was a democracy with a capitalist free enterprise economy, the USSR
was a communist dictatorship.




Atomic Bomb
During the Cold War, the USA and USSR created atomic weapons and built
arsenals (large amounts) of nuclear missiles and other weapons. By creating
large arsenals, each side tried to deter the other from ever actually using the
weapons. Some Americans built bomb shelters in response




Cold War
A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never
directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for
years. Strategies included stockpiling nuclear arms, economic support for
anti-communist movements, military alliances, propaganda and a space race. It
was an era of fear and tension.




Truman Doctrine

, purpose was to contain communism by giving 400 million dollars and military aid
to Greece and Turkey. This plan was risky but successful




Marshall Plan
US gave European nations $13 billion to rebuild after the war, to stabilize the
economy of Europe and to encourage democracy, isolate the Soviet Union and
contain communism




NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization- In response to the Berlin Airlift the US and
others formed a military alliance in response to the threat of communism. In
response to NATO, the Soviets formed the Warsaw Pact. This is the first time the
US joined an organization for collective security




GI Bill
The Servicemen's Readjustment Act caused an economic boom in the 1950s by
giving benefits given to returning WW2 veterans: included loans to buy homes
(contributed to housing growth and suburbs) also loans for college tuition.




Joseph McCarthy
accused Americans and US government workers (many in the State Dept) of
being communist without proof McCarthyism during the 1950. This led to fear
and tensions with the Soviet Union. This was similar to the Red Scare of the
1920s both feared the spread of communism.
