Ion Formation

Ions are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons. Cations are formed when an atom loses one or more
valence electrons, resulting in a positive charge. Conversely, anions are formed when an atom gains one
or more valence electrons, resulting in a negative charge.

Electron Structure

The octet rule states that atoms react to achieve the stable electron structure of a noble gas. The
electron dot structure is a depiction of the valence electrons around the symbol of an element. Valence
electrons are the electrons in the highest occupied energy level of an element's atoms.

Bonding

Ionic bonds are the force of attraction between oppositely charged ions. Halide ions, such as chlorine,
are ions with a negative charge.

Atomic Properties

Helium atoms have only two valence electrons. The calcium ion has an electron configuration of [Ar18]
3s^2.

Noble Gas Configuration

The octet rule states that atoms tend to have the electron configuration of a noble gas. Nitrogen gains
three electrons to achieve a noble gas electron configuration.
