, Q.1.The setting is fictitious; however it is adapted from a real place. Research the place it is

inspired from.

Manderley was inspired by Menabilly, a historic estate in Cornwall.

Q.2. What images come to your mind on knowing the setting of Cornwall in England? Look at

pictures of Cornwall on the internet and think of what might have inspired De Maurier to set her

novel in Manderley.

Cornwall has a dreamy and quiet atmosphere, which is ideal for the story of Rebecca, as the novel also

has an air of dark and suspense. For a newly married couple, it’s the right setting because it’s surreal,

almost fictitious, and the perfect setting to start a new life.

Q.3. The Manderley Estate is a plush and luxurious property, much to the protagonist’s delight.

But terrible consequences await her. What is the irony of this situation? Explain.

Manderley is a natural paradise, with woods, beaches and sea. It is an appropriate place to start a happy

married life. The narrator expects a comfortable and peaceful life with her husband in Manderley. The

readers are taken aback by seeing the protagonist's plight throughout the novel as she finds carving her

own identity at Manderley quite challenging because of the overwhelming presence of her husband's ex-

wife Rebecca. The narrator is full of doubt, as she is under great pressure to fit in at Manderley - that is,

to become Rebecca. Mrs. Danvers, the sinister housekeeper of Manderley also plays a major role in

making her feel insecure.

Practice Questions:

Q.4.Do you think the class and status difference/profession between the husband and the wife

leads to some conflict? Why/Why not?

Q.5. Why do you think the story is told from a woman’s point of view? What effect does it have on

readers like you?
