BPK 306 - Lecture 4 Questions for Success

Diagram the chemical and mechanical steps in the actin-myosin cross-bridge cycle.
- ANS On paper.

Distinguish between isometric and isotonic contraction. - ANS Isometric
contraction refers to a type of contraction where force production in muscle
increases but there is no increase or decrease in velocity of muscle lengthening or
shortening. An isotonic contraction consists of a change in muscle velocity. At a
molecular level, cross-bridges formed in an isometric contraction do not break and
reform, whereas in isotonic contractions there are constantly being broken and
remade to shorten the muscle.

Draw the force versus length diagram for skeletal muscle in vivo and in vitro and
distinguish between active, passive and total forces. - ANS On paper.

What are the main ingredients for skeletal muscle contraction? - ANS High
myoplasmic [Ca2+], supply of ATP, actin and myosin, and tropomyosin and
troponin.

Steps of XB cycle. - ANS 1. Attached state: Myosin attached to actin and in power
stroke position.

2. Released state: ATP binds myosin, causing release from actin. Still in power
stroke.

3. Cocked state: ATP is hydrolyzed causing myosin heads to return to their resting
conformation. ADP and P bound to myosin.
