Early Nursing Care of Newborn

-Assess for new marks or changes in old marks
-Skin turgor
-Cleanse diaper area with water and soap, or detergent free wipes




Infant bathing
-Delay 1st bath 12-24 hrs, and this bath removes blood and amniotic fluid


-Not recommended to remove all vernix (regulated pH)


-Tub bathing is ok - does not increase infection, or risk umbilical cord


-Water temp should be around 100.4ºF (38ºC)


-Comb thru hair to get out dried blood

-Check for bleeding and oozing during early hours
-Make sure clamp is securely fastened with no skin in it
-Clean cord with water and keep it clean and dry

-During early days, infant may lose 10% of birthweight (regain this by about 2
weeks)
-If breastfeeding, also need to have Vit D supplements (formulas usually have

-Start with small feedings, and feedings increase in size quickly

-Identification bracelets on mom and baby
-Teach parents to safeguard infant in hospital, and dont just let anyone take
the baby, even if they seem to know their way around and claim to be helping.
Ask for ID of staff
-Prevent infection by washing hands and dont let sick people around baby
