Certains critères permettent de hiérarchiser les personnages :
- La qualification
- La distribution
- L’autonomie
- La fonctionnalité

La qualification
• Quelles sont les qualités du personnage?
• Étudier la quantité et la nature des caractéristiques du personnage (dans le portrait) :
- La quantité : plus ou moins de caractéristiques, de détails?
Plus de détails, plus de caractéristiques = plus important.
- La nature : le personnage possède-t-il des caractéristiques
exceptionnelles?
Caractéristique exceptionnelle = plus important.
La distribution
• Comment le personnage est-il distribué dans l’œuvre?
• Étudier le nombre des apparitions d’un personnage et l’endroit où il apparaît :
- Le nombre : Un personnage apparaît-il plus ou moins souvent, plus ou moins
longtemps qu’un autre?
Plus souvent et plus longtemps = plus important.
- L’endroit : Il existe des lieux stratégiques dans le récit : début et fin de chapitre,
de partie, de roman.
Présence dans ces lieux stratégiques = plus important.
L’autonomie
• Quels liens le personnage entretient-il avec les autres? Est-il autonome?
• Le personnage principal et le héros se caractérisent par leur indépendance, ils ne
dépendent pas des autres personnages.
• Les personnages secondaires dépendent du personnage principal.
