Surah Noor tafseer:General info:
- The next surah after surah al-Mu'minoon is surah Noor.
- The definition of the word “An-noor” in English is “the light”.
- As mentioned in previous classes, some surahs got their names from upcoming ayahs; following
the same concept the name of this surah came from ayah 35.
- Surah Noor is the 24th surah, the surah is located in the 18th juz in the Quran.
- Surah noor is a Madani surah.
- The surah was revealed 5 or 6 years after hijrah, most likely after a battle; the battle’s name is
“battle of the trench”. There are many opinions about the revelation; the right one is surah noor
was revealed after the battle.
- The prophet tried his best to give dawah in Makkah to the Quraysh; when that did not work out he
moved to Madina. There were many different cultures that lived together with the muslims.
- In order to establish safety as a social aspect for the muslims; the prophet (pbuh) enforced rules to
be followed, surah Noor talks about some of the rules that were established during the prophet’s
stay in Madina.
- There were certain topics that were addressed in the surah such as hijab, lowering your gaze,
slander, zina as well as the punishments etc.
- One of the incidents that were discussed in the surah was the story of the slander of Aisha (ra);
this is news that was spread among al-munifiqeen. The believers started talking about her behind
her back, even though that was the wrong thing to do.
- Surah noor was revealed to take the accusation of her and prove her innocence.
- The main ayahs we are focusing on is ayat 30 and 31.
- Ayah 30 is addressed to the men; it asks men to lower their gaze, protect their private parts, guard
their chastity as discussed in surah mu'minoon.
- Islam prohibts any reltionship between a man and a woman outside of marrige, all of these
temptations are from shaytaan; they are the little steps that lead you to zina.
- Ayat 31 is addressed to the women, the same ruling applies to men and women; lower their gaze;
women must not show any adornments other than what is visible towards everyone. Women can
only show their adornments to their mehram; everyone else is prohibited. The ayat shows the
etiquette of wearing the hijab, as well as the parts that should cover it.
