Variables: Independent are temperature of water (℃), dependent are temperature of solution (℃)

Testable question: Does change in temperature of water affect the specific heat capacity of a
compound?

Hypothesis: Specific heat capacity is a property that shows the amount of heat energy that is
needed to increase the temperature of any system. There are 3 factors that affect specific heat
capacity of a compound. They are temperature change, the system’s mass and the substance and
its phase which refers to solid, liquid or gas. The amount of heat that is transferred to a system
leading to a change in specific heat capacity is related to the temperature change of the outside
environment (Libretexts, 2023). It is hypothesized that when the temperature of the water is
changed, the specific heat capacity of compound Y will also change.

Materials: 250 ml erlenmeyer flask, 3000 ml distilled water & flask containing 100 ml of
compound Y.

Procedure:
1) The simulation was opened. File in the upper left corner was selected to open the
assignment. Load an assignment was chosen from the drop down list.
2) Thermochemistry was selected from the assignment list. Coolant 1 was chosen after
scrolling down, arrow to the right was selected. The lab was opened.
3) The 250 ml erlenmeyer flask was selected from the glassware tab in the stockroom. The
flask appeared on the lab bench.
4) The flask was right clicked and renamed “Water”.
5) 3000 ml of distilled water container was added to the lab bench by clicking on the
solutions tab in the stockroom.
6) The carboy of distilled water was clicked, held then moved to the flask marked “Water”.
A measurement box appeared. 50 ml of distilled water was transferred into the flask then
returned to the stockroom.
7) In the Stockroom, the erlenmeyer flask containing 100 ml of compound y was added to
the lab bench. Compound Y is assumed to have a density of 1.62g/ml.
8) The flask containing water was right clicked from the lab bench and thermal properties
were chosen. “Insulate from surroundings” was clicked and the temperature was changed
to 40 °C for trial 1.
9) The flask containing compound Y was right clicked and thermal properties were chosen.
“Insulate from surroundings” was clicked and the temperature (Independent variable) was
changed to 20 °C.
10) The flask containing compound y was clicked and held then moved over on the top of the
flask containing water. A measurement box appeared. 100.00 ml of compound Y was
transferred into the flask containing water. The final temperature of the solution
(Dependent variable) was recorded.
11) Steps 3–10 were repeated for water at 50 °C (Trial 2).
12) Steps 3–10 were repeated for water at 60 °C (Trial 3).
13) All pertinent data was recorded into a well-organized table.
